10. [A Renowned Spot for Autumn Leaves – Lake Juniko]
Lying at the foot of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, Shirakami-Sanchi, you’ll find a collection of 33 lakes and ponds referred to as Lake Juniko.
The most famous of which is Aoike Pond with its majestically flowing cobalt water and mystery of its colour still going unexplained to this day.
The reflection of autumn coloured leaves upon the bright blues of the pond will leave a lasting scene of picturesque beauty in the minds of all onlookers.
The fallen red and yellow leaves floating on the surface remind us of the elegance and serenity of nature.
Nearby you’ll also find a rock formation called the Nihon Canyon. There’s even a walking trail connecting Lake Juniko and the Nihon Canyon.
To access this area while enjoying the beautiful sights along the coastline take the Resort Shirakami train which was specifically designed to give you the best view of Shirakami-Sanchi.

9.[Showa Giant Buddha]
Perhaps you’ve never seen a giant statue of Buddha before, but this one is in fact the largest seated Buddha statue in all of Japan!
At a height of 21.35 metres it’s even taller than the famous statues located in Nara and Kamakura.
It was constructed in 1984 and consists of two inner floors, the lower floor features Buddhist paintings and the top floor is a memorial consoling the war dead.
This giant Buddha is located on the grounds of Seiryu Temple along with a 5-storey pagoda made of Japanese Hiba Cypress and a well manicured Japanese garden.
You can try your hand out at copying sutras or even Zen meditation (reservation required).
